Tsega Gebreyes

Born December 14, 1969, Tsega Gebreyes MBA is an Ethiopian-born investment banker. Gebreyes is the Founding Director of Satya Capital Limited and, under her leadership, Satya has invested over $80 million in companies like Guaranty Trust Bank, a Nigerian commercial bank and Chemi & Cortex, a Tanzanian consumer goods firm. Gebreyes started off her career with Citibank and McKinsey & Company, Inc.

At McKinsey, she was a member of the Executive Management team and was responsible for driving its acquisition and expansion into new markets and business segments. Mrs Gebreyes holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Harvard Business School, along with a double major in Economics and International Studies from Rhodes College.

From 1999, she also served at Celtel International BV (later named Zain Africa B.V.) as the Chief Business Development and Strategy Officer. During this part of her career, she helped raise capital for key acquisitions and drew the blueprint for the company’s regional expansion. She was able to attract capital for investments in Africa and proved a driving force behind the growth of the business through multi-country expansion across the country. She was also Founding Partner and Investment Professional at the New Africa Opportunity Fund LLP (re-named Zeypher Opportunity Fund LLP), a US $120 million private equity Fund currently managed by Zephyr Asset Management. Gebreyes was responsible for the fundraising and closing of the Fund. Subsequently, she led investment activities and served as director on a number of operating company boards including Ison Grown.

Crucially, she was to play a role in leading the M&A process that ultimately led to the $3.4 billion acquisition of Celtel by MTC Kuwait. She served as an Executive at Citigroup, Inc and has been an Independent Director at SES, S.A. since April 04, 2013. Gebreyes also served as Director of Hygeia Nigeria Limited, serving as a Member of the Investment Committee at Investment Fund for Health in Africa.
